Marjane Satrapi (November 22, 1969 – June 4, 2026) was a French-Iranian cartoonist, graphic novelist, filmmaker, and human rights advocate. Born in Rasht, Iran, she is best known for Persepolis (2000–2003), the autobiographical graphic memoir series chronicling her childhood in Tehran during and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. She co-directed the animated film adaptation of Persepolis (2007) with Vincent Paronnaud, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature — making her the first woman nominated in that category. Satrapi arrived in France in 1994 and became a French citizen in 2006. Her other graphic works include Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, and Woman Life Freedom (2023), a collection of essays supporting the Iranian protest movement. She died in Paris on June 4, 2026, of what her family described as grief following the death of her husband, Swedish producer and actor Mattias Ripa, who died on April 8, 2025. She was 56.
