Keith Giffen (October 10, 1952 – October 9, 2023) was one of the most prolific and inventive writer-artists in American comics, whose work spanned five decades and an extraordinary range of tones — from cosmic opera to absurdist comedy to dark horror. He co-created Rocket Raccoon, Lobo, and the Jamie Reyes version of Blue Beetle. His run on Legion of Super-Heroes redefined that franchise. His Justice League International run with J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire brought genuine humor and humanity to the superhero team book. He worked at virtually every major publisher across his career and was widely regarded as one of the most generous and encouraging figures in the industry. He died of a stroke at age 70, one day before his birthday.
