John Romita Sr. (January 24, 1930 – June 12, 2023) was an American comic book artist whose work defined Spider-Man for generations of readers. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Romita took over The Amazing Spider-Man from Steve Ditko in 1966 and transformed the series, introducing Mary Jane Watson, redesigning Peter Parker, and co-creating Wolverine, the Punisher, and Luke Cage. As Marvel's art director from 1973, he shaped the visual identity of the entire line. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2002.
