Joe Kubert (September 18, 1926 – August 12, 2012) was a Polish-born American comic book artist, educator, and founder of the Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. Born in Jezierzany, Poland (now Ukraine) and raised in Brooklyn, Kubert began his comics career at age 12 and went on to define some of DC's most enduring characters — particularly Sgt. Rock, Hawkman, and Tor — through decades of distinctive, dynamic artwork. He founded his own art school in 1976, training generations of professional comic artists. He was inducted into the Harvey Awards' Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998.
