Jamal Campbell

Jamal Campbell is a Canadian comic book artist and writer known for his innovative visual storytelling, bold use of color, and distinctive style that blends character-driven emotional depth with dynamic panel design. He has worked for DC Comics, Marvel, BOOM! Studios, and others.

Campbell first drew widespread attention for his work on Far Sector (DC Comics, 2019-2021), the acclaimed series written by N.K. Jemisin that introduced Jo Mullein, the first African American woman Green Lantern. His work on the series was praised for its astonishing visuals and inventive panel layouts. He subsequently drew Superman (DC) and several other major titles.

In 2025, Campbell launched Zatanna (DC Comics), a six-issue limited series in which he served as both writer and artist — his first solo writer/artist project for DC. The series was a commercial and critical success, consistently outselling other DC titles, and led directly to a new ongoing series, Zatanna: DC Next Level (launching April 2026), cementing his status as one of the most in-demand creator/artists at DC Comics.

In 2026, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards celebrated its most diverse nominee class in the 38-year history of the awards, with a historic number of Black creators nominated across categories. Campbell received a 2026 Eisner nomination for Best Writer/Artist for Zatanna (DC).
