Gary Friedrich (August 21, 1943 – August 29, 2018) was an American comic book writer best known for co-creating Ghost Rider — the supernatural motorcyclist Johnny Blaze — for Marvel Comics. Born and raised in Jackson, Missouri, Friedrich brought his friend Roy Thomas into comics and made his own mark writing Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos before creating Ghost Rider in Marvel Spotlight #5 (1972). His career was marked by a long and painful legal battle with Marvel over creator rights to Ghost Rider, a fight that became emblematic of the broader struggle for creator recognition in the comics industry.
