Denny O'Neil (May 3, 1939 – June 11, 2020) was one of the most consequential writers and editors in the history of American comics. His collaborations with artist Neal Adams in the early 1970s — particularly on Batman and Green Lantern/Green Arrow — permanently reshaped superhero storytelling by introducing social realism, moral ambiguity, and genuine emotional weight into a medium that had grown complacent. His Batman work established the template of the Dark Knight as a creature of the night and a detective rather than a campy adventurer. His Green Lantern/Green Arrow series confronted drug addiction, poverty, and racism with a directness that challenged the Comics Code Authority. As an editor at DC Comics from the 1980s through the 2000s, O'Neil shaped the careers of dozens of creators. He edited Frank Miller's landmark Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns, and oversaw the entire Batman line for nearly two decades.
