Catherine Anyango Grünewald (born 1982, Nairobi, Kenya) is a Swedish-Kenyan artist, illustrator, and lecturer whose work uses the materiality of drawing to explore systemic oppression, memory, and justice. She grew up in Kenya and now lives and works in Stockholm. She studied at Central Saint Martins, the Royal College of Art, and University College London, and taught at the Royal College of Art for ten years. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in Illustration at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.
Grünewald's graphic novel adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (SelfMadeHero, 2010) was published to critical acclaim and translated into eight languages. Her adaptation of Sister Helen Prejean's memoir Dead Man Walking: Graphic Edition (Random House, 2025), scripted by Rose Vines, took six years to complete and received widespread critical praise.
In 2026, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards celebrated its most diverse nominee class in the 38-year history of the awards, with a historic number of Black creators nominated across categories. Grünewald received a 2026 Eisner nomination for Best Adaptation from Another Medium for Dead Man Walking: Graphic Edition (Random House), alongside scriptwriter Rose Vines.
