Barbara Brandon-Croft is a Black American cartoonist and the first Black female cartoonist to be nationally syndicated in the mainstream press. She is the creator of Where I'm Coming From — a comic strip featuring a cast of Black women discussing politics, relationships, culture, and everyday life. Brandon-Croft began self-syndicating the strip in 1989, distributing it to Black community newspapers. In 1991, Universal Press Syndicate picked up the strip, making her the first Black woman syndicated in the mainstream press. The strip ran through 2005. She is the daughter of Brumsic Brandon Jr., the creator of the pioneering Luther comic strip. Brandon-Croft's work continues to appear in collections and academic discussions of Black women's contributions to American comics.
