Summary
Stranger Comics is an independent comic book and entertainment company founded in 2007 (publishing began 2008) by Sebastian A. Jones in Los Angeles, California. Jones — who grew up in England, moved to the United States at 18, and previously served as President of MVP Records — created Stranger Comics to tell the stories that Hollywood repeatedly rejected in the 1990s because they featured a Black female lead. The company is best known for the world of Asunda — an interconnected Afro-fantasy universe drawing on African, Asian, and European mythologies — and its lead character Niobe Ayutami, a half-elf, half-demon orphan teenager who is the prophesied savior of Asunda. Niobe: She is Life, co-written with actress Amandla Stenberg and illustrated by Ashley A. Woods, became the first nationally distributed comic with a Black female author, artist, and lead hero in history. A foreword was contributed by Viola Davis. Stranger Comics has a development deal with HBO for the world of Asunda. Sebastian A. Jones has co-founded Payback Entertainment with Prentice Penny (Insecure) as a BIPOC comic development and TV/film incubator. Titles include: The Untamed series, Niobe series, Dusu: Path of the Ancient, Erathune, Tales of Asunda, Morka Moa, Salvador, Pinata, and the I Am Book Series (with Garcelle Beauvais). Stranger Comics is represented by the WME Agency and the law offices of Bradley Garrett, Esq.
