Blaq Girl Comics

Blaq Girl Comics is an independent comic book publisher founded in 2025 by Karla Medrano (also known as Moon the Storyteller) — award-winning writer, creative strategist, nurse, wife, and mom. The company's mission is to celebrate and center the brown and Black girl experience from around the globe, publishing comics, poetry, and prose that elevate indigenous, brown, and Black women's joy, soft power, sisterhood, and wonder — with the belief that these stories are the future of publishing, not a niche. Blaq Girl Comics soft-launched in 2025 with submissions opening in Fall 2025. The publisher's flagship title is Luna: The Queen of Mahru — a fantasy series originally published under Konkret Comics, which Medrano re-launched under Blaq Girl Comics beginning with Luna #1 (available on Amazon). Luna #2 and Luna #3 followed in March and April 2026. Additional titles in development include Afros, Besos and Chocolate (a children's book) and My Sister is a Dragon (co-written). Medrano has also been commissioned to write for Freestyle Comics (Ossira) and Summit Comics (Juna). The publisher maintains a Patreon community offering early access and pre-order discounts. Karla Medrano is also the founder of The Zelda Awards (thezeldaawards.org) — an annual virtual awards celebration honoring women in comics, named after Zelda 'Jackie' Ormes, the first known Black woman to professionally publish a syndicated comic strip. The inaugural Zelda Awards took place on April 11, 2026.
