Barbara "Bobbie" Chase is one of the most accomplished editors in the history of the American comic book industry and one of the highest-ranking women ever to hold editorial power at either of the two major publishers. She began her career at Marvel Comics in 1985 as an assistant editor, was promoted to editor in 1986, and spent the following decade editing some of the most iconic titles in Marvel's catalog, including a ten-year run on The Incredible Hulk with writer Peter David, as well as Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Fantastic Four, G.I. Joe, and many others. In 1994, she became Editor-in-Chief of the Marvel Edge imprint — making her the first and, for a long time, only woman to hold an Editor-in-Chief title at Marvel. She was named Executive Editor of Marvel Entertainment in 1995. After leaving Marvel in 2001, Chase worked in children's publishing before returning to comics in 2011, joining DC Comics as a senior editor on Batman titles including Nightwing, Batgirl, and Teen Titans. She was promoted to DC Universe Editorial Director in 2012, and in 2015 was named Vice President of Talent Development, overseeing young reader imprints, Wildstorm, Hanna-Barbera, DC Kids, and the revived Milestone imprint. She was laid off from DC in August 2020. In 2021 she joined Webtoon as Executive Editor of Webtoon Unscrolled, retiring from the comics industry in January 2024 after nearly four decades. Chase is credited with helping launch the careers of artists Salvador Larroca and Jamal Igle. She is currently writing a memoir about her time at Marvel.
