John Buscema (December 11, 1927 – January 10, 2002) was an American comic book artist and one of Marvel Comics' most essential figures during its 1960s and 1970s ascendancy. Born Giovanni Natale Buscema in Brooklyn, he defined the look of The Avengers and Silver Surfer, penciled over 200 Conan the Barbarian stories, and contributed at least one issue to nearly every major Marvel title. Co-author of the landmark instructional book How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way with Stan Lee, Buscema's anatomically powerful, classically composed artwork shaped the visual identity of the Marvel Universe for a generation of readers and future creators. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2002.
