Gene Colan (September 1, 1926 – June 23, 2011) was an American comic book artist known for his cinematic, atmospheric penciling style that set him apart from every other artist of his era. Born in the Bronx, Colan spent decades as a cornerstone of Marvel Comics, with defining runs on Daredevil, Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, and The Tomb of Dracula — where he helped create Blade. He co-created the Falcon, Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), and the original Guardians of the Galaxy. His fluid, shadow-drenched figures and innovative panel compositions brought a noir realism to superhero comics that remains unmatched. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2005.
